Health Technology Assessment Event

Nations across Europe and around the world all agree that healthcare technology assessment (HTA) is an important mechanism in the process of deciding which medicines should be paid for through public funding. But there is no consensus as to the appropriate tools for 21st century, patient-centric HTA.

Stockholm Network, the Center for Medicine in the Public Interest and Timbro joined together to host a timely and lively debate on this important issue..

Dr Meir Pugatch is the Director of Research of the Stockholm Network and also heads the Intellectual Property and Competition Programme.

Dr Pugatch is a senior lecturer at the University of Haifa in Israel where he also is the Co-Chair of the Division of Management and Administration at the School of Public Health. He is also an adjunct research fellow of the Australian Global Studies Research Centre, at the University of Western Australia.

Tobias Nilsson is part of the political leadership at the Swedish Department of Health and Social Affairs.

The work of the Ministry of Health and Social Affairs covers basic welfare issues and a broad policy field - economic security, social services, health and medical care, public health and the rights of children and people with disabilities. The Minister for Health and Social Affairs, and the head of the Ministry, is Göran Hägglund. The Minister for Elderly Care and Public Health is Maria Larsson and the Minister for Social Security is Cristina Husmark Pehrsson.

Peter Pitts is President and co-founder of the Center for Medicine in the Public Interest (CMPI) and Senior Vice President, Director for Global Health Affairs for Manning Selvage & Lee.

CMPI's agenda is research driven. And in turn, their research consists of well-designed clinical outcomes and rigorous econometric studies that analyse the value of new medicines and genomic and molecular-based medical innovation from the consumer's perspective. They have established three unique research programs that are at the centre of their policy and outreach activities.

Richard Bergström is Director-General of Läkemedelsindustriföreningen (LIF).
LIF is a trade association for the research-based pharmaceutical industry in Sweden. Through its membership of more than 60 pharmaceutical companies, LIF is the voice of the pharmaceutical industry, arguing for efficient and modern medical care. LIF is also a service organization for its members and continuously informs them of developments which can influence their Swedish operations.
