The Stockholm Network's Health and Welfare Program was established at the end of 2005. The programme has the following key aims and objectives:

  • To provide a comprehensive resource on European think tank initiatives in the field of Health and Welfare
  • To promote competition and choice in healthcare, through reform of European health systems and markets;
  • To promote more flexible labour markets in Europe
  • To promote market oriented reform of Europe's failing pensions systems

Dr Meir Pugatch, Director of Research for the Stockholm Network, had an article published in the German magazine "Arzt & Wirtschaft". In the article Dr Pugatch discusses the use of Health Technology Assessment (HTA) in the German health system. He recommended that the role of the HTA body “IQWiG” should be confined to setting reimbursement limits; it should not tell patients which medication to take.

Evidence-Based Medicine Neglects Individual Needs

The movement called rational use of medicine (RUM) is about controlling both drug formularies and information.

RUM encompasses various expressions used to define and promote three interrelated notions which are not entirely synonymous but which have a common objective: reducing the role of medicines. It is based on a belief in the relative ineffectiveness of drug innovation, prescription abuse, and general unsustainability of the cost of medicines in developed and developing countries alike.
